In the last few years, an increasing number of people around the world have turned to cannabidiol (CBD) after hearing of its plethora of potential health benefits. However, there are a huge array of products available now. These products range from CBD-infused food to CBD oils and e-liquids – and one must first decide how to consume it. For that reason, many people are drawn to the benefits of CBD edibles.
It makes quite a difference. How long you have to wait to feel CBD’s effects, as well as for how long you feel them, varies. It also depends on the method of consumption because it is processed differently in the body. Varying biodelivery causes varying results.
Long-lasting Benefits of CBD Edibles
There’s one main benefit of ingesting CBD by consuming a CBD edible, such as a gummy, cookie, brownie, or honey. Once the CBD’s effects start to kick in around an hour or so later, they are long-lasting. One study on mice found that the average time ingested CBD stayed in the body – known as the “mean residence time” (MRT) – was 4.2 hours. However, it’s actually fairly common for people to feel the effects for up to 6 to 8 hours. To put this into context, the same study found injected CBD to have an MRT of just 3.3 hours.
Are There Other Benefits?
Out of all the methods of consumption, ingested CBD has the lowest bioavailability – roughly 6% to 19%. With ingested CBD, before it goes into the bloodstream and takes effect throughout the body, the stomach first processes it. From there, it moves on to the liver, where it breaks down into metabolites. This may mean you have to consume a higher dose to feel the desired effects.
However, although there’s no guaranteed solution when it comes to taking CBD, current research shows that consuming CBD edibles allows you to feel the effects of the cannabinoid for longer compared with other methods of consumption. This makes it more suitable for the treatment of certain conditions than, for example, vaping CBD e-liquid. In addition, it’s easy to incorporate into your everyday life – not to mention tasty, too. For that reason, for many people, it’s a matter of personal preference. Some find that the benefits of CBD edibles are too good to pass up.
